Teeth Grinding or Bruxism

I found the meaning of this while researching because my family told me that I'm grinding my teeth during the night while sleeping. They always tell me before and ask me always if my teeth's ok because as they listened, it sounds like they are breaking. My husband told me also and he can gets awake before in the middle of night but now he's already used to it.

Bruxism is the medical term for grinding, gnashing or clenching your teeth. The condition affects both children and adults. Bruxism may be mild and may not even require treatment. However, it can be frequent and severe enough to lead to jaw disorders, headaches, damaged teeth and other problems. Unfortunately, people with sleep bruxism usually aren't aware of the habit, so they aren't diagnosed with the condition until complications occur. That's why it's important to know the signs and symptoms of bruxism and to seek regular dental care.

In adults, psychological factors seem to be associated with bruxism, including:

  • Anxiety, stress or tension
  • Suppressed anger or frustration
  • Aggressive, competitive or hyperactive personality type
